Cristiano Ronaldo falls over while attempting stepover v Shakhtar Donetsk

Cristiano Ronaldo produced a fantastic individual performance for Real Madrid in their 4-3 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night - but there was one embarrassing moment for the Portuguese superstar during the match.

Ronaldo scored two goals and provided two assists in Real Madrid’s narrow victory - Shakhtar scored three times in the final 13 minutes - and was clearly the outstanding candidate for the Man of the Match award.

However, the 30-year-old also managed to fall over the ball while attempting to beat an opponent with a stepover. (Scroll down this page to watch the video).

Ronaldo fancied his chances of ghosting past Márcio Azevedo with one of his classic skills but ended up tripping over, much to the amusement of fans on Twitter.

Still, Ronaldo’s embarrassing moment shouldn’t detract from the fact he was in magnificent form against the Ukrainian outfit.

Fans on Twitter found it funny...

Huge performance from Ronaldo

This was precisely the type of performance Ronaldo needed to produce to silence those critics who claimed he is now in decline following his display in the Clasico on Saturday.

He failed to make an impact during the 4-0 defeat to Barcelona at the weekend but bounced back in style against Shakhtar.

Rafael Benitez, who received a vote of confidence from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez at the start of the week, will also be mightily relieved that Ronaldo produced one of his best performances of the season last night.

This was a fixture the under-fire Spaniard could ill-afford to lose - and Ronaldo proved that speculation claiming he isn’t motivated to play for Benitez is almost certainly wide of the mark.
