Football News

The nominations for the 2015 FIFA Puskas award have been revealed and the 10-man shortlist has been whittled down to the final three.

Lionel Messi's incredible solo goal in the Copa del Rey final is joined by Alessandro Florenzi's strike from almost half-way - against Barcelona- and Wendell Lira's stunning overhead kick for Brazilian side Goianésia.

There were some incredible nominations for this year's award. Goals such as Philippe Mexes' chest height volley for AC Milan and David Ball's sumptuous chip for Fleetwood have missed the cut.

The Puskas award will be handed out at the FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony on January 11 and here are three finalists.

Lionel Messi

Messi has scored some wonderful goals in 2015 but none more so than his unbelievable solo effort against Athletic Bilbao.

The Argentine has never claimed the Puskas award but is in with a great chance this season.

20 minutes into the Copa del Rey final, Messi picked up the ball on the right wing before beating four Bilbao defenders and firing past Iago Herrerin.

Alessandro Florenzi

As far as long distance strikes go, they don't come any sweeter than this from Florenzi.

Barcelona were leading Roma 1-0 in the opening round of games in the 2015 Champions League group stage.

Luis Suarez had put the Blaugrana ahead, but ten minutes later Florenzi unleashed a stunning effort from just inside the opposing half that left Marc-Andre ter Stegen stranded.

Wendell Lira

Lira is a player who will be unknown to the majority of football fans outside of Brazil.

But he made headlines with this stunning overhead kick for Goianesia against Atletico-GO in the Brazilian Goiano.

A slick passing exchange on the edge of Atletico's box saw the ball chipped over the defence to Lima. The striker showed incredible agility to twist his body in mid-air and put his side 1-0 up.
