Arsenal are preparing a £22 million January bid for FC Porto midfielder Ruben Neves in January.

That is according to the Sun, who report Arsene Wenger wants cover for the injured Francis Coquelin and sees the teenager as the ideal signing to reignite their title charge.

Gunners scouts have watched Neves on a number of occasions this season and the Portugal international has not disappointed.

Since breaking into the Porto first-team, the 18-year-old has made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and becoming the youngest captain in Champions League history.

The British daily reports Arsenal would be willing to pay £12 million up-front, with the other £10 million coming through add-ons.

With Francis Coquelin set to be out of action until the back end of the transfer window, Wenger clearly feels he needs to strengthen his midfield.

While the Gunners are blessed with a number of top-quality attacking midfielders, their defensive options leave a lot to be admired.

Mathieu Flamini was tasked with replacing Coquelin against Norwich City and produced a solid performance.

But apart from the Frenchman, Arsenal are really scraping the barrel when it comes to defensive midfield options.

The Porto star has a grown reputation in European football and has been linked with a number of clubs since the summer transfer window.

He has made six Primeira Liga appearances for the Dragons and has started all five of their Champions League group games this season.

At 18, he still has time to blossom into a top-class defensive midfielder, but he could still do a job for the Gunners as soon as January.
