Anders Lindegaard played just 19 Premier League games during a five-year spell at Manchester United, so it is fair to say the Denmark international failed to make much of an impression with fans.

But he still managed to leave a mark on Wayne Rooney, as the Red Devils captain revealed in a recent interview. Rooney named the goalkeeper as the most annoying man he has ever had to play football with.

The England international was asked by Sport Magazine which team-mate he would least like being stuck in a lift with, to which he replied: “Anders Lindegaard. He’s just annoying.”

It was a strange admission from Rooney, who had plenty of other stars to choose from. Few would have guessed the seemingly quiet and modest Lindegaard would be quite pleasant to hang around.

Regardless, Rooney has probably been loving life around Manchester United's Carrington training ground this season, because Lindegaard finally left to be the backup goalkeeper at West Brom in the summer.

The reaction

Leading Danish newspaper BT has not ignored the comments, running a story on Rooney's admission in today's edition.

They question whether Rooney said the words in jest or otherwise, but the tone of the article seems to assume that the striker was being deadly serious.

But it is worth noting that Lindegaard has not featured for the national team since 2010 and is certainly not one of their treasured athletes. Indeed, he comes nowhere near the reputation enjoyed by superstars like Nicklas Bendtner and Christian Eriksen.

Needless to say, this is one storm that is likely to blow over very soon.
