Louis van Gaal is determined to win the battle for Borussia Dortmund’s in-form striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea.

This is according to the Mirror, who understand Manchester United will need to shell out £42 million in order to sign the Gabon international.

Aubameyang has been in lethal form this season - scoring 22 goals in 18 games for BVB - and is now widely regarded as one of European football’s most accomplished strikers.

Van Gaal may regard Aubameyang as a potential long-term replacement for Wayne Rooney, whose performances have been well below-par this season. With two goals from 12 Premier League appearances this term, the United captain’s place in Van Gaal’s starting line-up is under real scrutiny.

Anthony Martial, who arrived at Old Trafford in a £36 million deal from AS Monaco at the end of the summer transfer window, has also been deployed upfront by Van Gaal on occasions this season. The 19-year-old enjoyed a blistering start to his Manchester United career but has struggled for goals in recent weeks.

Aubameyang would ease burden on Martial

Because of his age, it was inevitable that Martial - who is also capable of playing on the wings - would be inconsistent during his first couple of seasons at Old Trafford. Having a striker like Aubameyang at the club to ease the goalscoring burden on his shoulders would surely benefit the immensely talented France international in the long run.

Aubameyang is one of a handful of elite strikers who could seriously bolster Manchester United’s chances of winning silverware next season.

But prising him away from Signal Iduna Park won’t be easy for the Red Devils.
