What have you done, Rafa? Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez has sensationally played an ineligible player during his side's Copa del Rey Round of 32 clash against Cadiz this evening.

After picking up three yellow cards in last season's competition while on loan at Villarreal, Denis Cheryshev wasn't supposed to take to the field for the fixture.

However, not only did Benitez select Cheryshev, the Russian international opened the scoring after just three minutes of the encounter. Incredibly, while the contest was being played, word was getting out that the 24-year-old was ineligible.

Ultimately, then, Benitez removed the dynamic midfielder from the pitch just 40 seconds into the second-half. Amid the uncertainty, Real secured a 3-1 win but it's now far from certain as to whether they will progress into the next round.

And one man has certainly enjoyed the chaos surrounding the Bernabeu giants this evening. That man is Barcelona star Gerard Pique. The former Manchester United defender just couldn't resist taking to social media during proceedings.

It appears that Pique, who is very much an advocate for Catalan independence, has been crying with laughter tonight.

Benitez nightmare

To update things further, Ed Maylon from the Mirror has now suggested that Real Madrid substitute Borja Mayoral was also ineligible. It really is going from bad to worse for Benitez in the Spanish capital.

The Real Madrid boss even had to endure a 'Benitez look at Twitter' chant this evening. You have to feel that this saga has only just begun.
