WWE are in a prime position to experiment with new things.
We all know the ratings are at an all-time low, and putting the belt on Sheamus isn't creating a new interest anytime soon.
What they needed to do was give the title to someone who could command an increase in ratings whilst injecting hope into a stale world championship scene.

As of late, their top guys like John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan and The Undertaker have become largely unreliable.
The injuries are beginning to mount and the age factor is becoming a big issue. Now is the time to capitalise on the talent they have and create the next big star.
Next man up
This brings us to the present. Who can lead the line? Who can be entrusted to lift the sunken ship from the depths of the gloomy waters?
Kevin Owens. Formally known as 'Kevin Steen', Owens put pen to paper with WWE earlier this year and it has proved to be one of the best decisions the company have made in 2015.
Owens emerged as a no-nonsense, hard-hitting, big mouthed brawler and the average wrestling fan knew it was only a matter of time before the opportunity presented itself for him in WWE.
His debut on Monday Night Raw had a big influence on the beginning of his career as he delivered a pop-up powerbomb to WWE's most heralded superstar, John Cena.
Not since The Shield tossed Ryback through an announcer's table at Survivor Series 2012 has someone made this kind of impact on their debut.
Owens had the responsibility of feuding with the company's top guy on his debut. Did he let anyone down? Not a chance. In fact, it proved to be one of Cena's better feuds over recent years.
Got it all
Owens could very well be the company's next big megastar. He has everything that wrestling fans love. Putting the belt on Owens could spark a huge buzz within the WWE universe, a buzz that would continue to grow, no doubt.
His mic skills and the way he works a crowd come across as completely effortless and natural, but what makes him even better are the moves he is packing in his arsenal.
Moves such as the pop-up powerbomb, the cannonball and even moonsaults from the top rope are what make him so enjoyable to watch.
Owens is just another star waiting in line to reach the top, it's just a matter of when WWE decide to push him.
The Sheamus reign could possibly be a temporary storyline until the creative team have their script lined up heading towards Wrestlemania 32.
One thing is for certain, between guys such as Cesaro, Ziggler, Reigns and Del Rio, Owens is the one who should be the next in line for the WWE World Heavvyweight Championship.
