Brazilian winger Douglas Costa has revealed the reason why he chose to join Bayern Munich instead of heading towards Premier League champions Chelsea this summer.

The 25-year-old spoke highly of the Blues as well as Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho whilst at Shakhtar Donetsk, so it came as a surprise when he decided to join the German giants instead.

He told Bild, according to "Chelsea also wanted to sign me. They were seriously interested and made great efforts.

"But I really only wanted to work with Guardiola and join Bayern. I made a conscious decision to join Bayern because of the presence of Guardiola.”

He believed that under the guidance of the Spanish manager he would learn and develop more than under Mourinho.

Chelsea were favourites to sign Costa until the latter stages of negotiations, when the Bavarians came calling and the Brazil international snubbed a move to London in favour of the Bundesliga champions.

However, he didn’t come cheap as Bayern paid Shakhtar €30 million for his services - the fourth highest transfer fee in the club’s history.

Costa signed a five-year contract with Guardiola’s side and made an immediate impact alongside the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.

Featuring extensively in the starting line-up, Costa has made 20 appearances for the club this season, scoring five goals.

Astute at playing on both flanks and in an advanced central role, Costa has provided seven assists so far in the league.

A favourite of Guardiola's, Costa has proved one of the architects in Bayern's dominance this season, and with Chelsea struggling to defend their English crown, Costa has fully justified his decision to chose the Bavarians over the west London outfit.
