Neymar becomes first Barcelona player to win La Liga Player of the Month award

It sounds far-fetched but it’s absolutely true: no Barcelona had ever won the La Liga Player of the Month award until now.

Neymar has become the first player from the Camp Nou to win the monthly accolade - yes, it’s one of the very few individual awards that Lionel Messi still hasn’t landed his hands on - following a superb November, per Sport.

The Brazil international scored five goals - including one in the Clasico against bitter rivals Real Madrid - and registered two assists for the Catalan giants in La Liga last month. Luis Suarez scored the same number of goals but provided one fewer assist, which is probably why the award went to Neymar instead.

It’s true that the La Liga Player of the Month award wasn’t introduced until September 2013, but the fact it’s taken so long for a Barcelona player to win the accolade is still a big surprise - especially when you consider they won the title last season.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won it on two occasions, as have Atletico Madrid duo Antoine Griezmann and Diego Godin.

But only now has a Barcelona player - Rafinha doesn’t really count because he won the award while on loan from Barça with Celta Vigo - secured the monthly prize.

Neymar and Suarez both deserved it

Neymar thoroughly deserved to win the award, although perhaps it would have been more fitting had it been shared between the Brazilian superstar and Suarez.

Both players have been pivotal for Barcelona over recent weeks - particularly in the absence of Messi, who is now back in action following his injury lay-off - but it’s Neymar who gets the recognition on this occasion.
