Lionel Messi scored a classy goal - his 80th in the Champions League - to put Barcelona 1-0 up against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena.

The Argentina international received a lovely pass from Ivan Rakitic after timing his run to perfection and expertly rounded the ball past Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno before tapping into the empty net.

It was a fine goal from the four-time Ballon d’Or winner - although poor defending from the Barcelona defence allowed Javier Hernandez to equalise three minutes later. (Scroll down this page to watch both goals).

Messi has now scored 10 goals in all competitions this season; his tally surprisingly low due to the two months he missed after suffering a knee injury against Las Palmas in September.

The 28-year-old appears determined to make up for lost time and now has four goals in his three appearances for the Catalan giants.

Ronaldo's on fire...

It seems very unlikely that Messi will finish the season with more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo, however.

The Real Madrid superstar bagged four goals in an 8-0 win over Malmo on Tuesday night, taking his tally to 11 goals scored in the Champions League group stages alone - a new record.
