Arsenal completed what Arsene Wenger described as the 'great escape' on Wednesday evening as they overcame Olympiacos 3-0 to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Having lost their first two group games, the Gunners' chances looked bleak, but three wins out of four sent the Emirates outfit through behind German giants Bayern Munich.

Olivier Giroud completed a hat-trick at the Karaiskakis Stadium, becoming the fourth Arsenal player - after Thierry Henry, Nicklas Bendtner and Danny Welbeck - to do so in the Champions League.

And his teammates were quick to take to social media, after the match, to celebrate their achievements.

It was a truly special night for Arsenal and Giroud, and, having received a lot of criticism, the French forward showed his class in Greece.

Mesut Ozil and Joel Campbell were also on top form, but it was the 29-year-old who stole the show.

It is now the 16th consecutive season that Wenger has taken Arsenal into the knockout stages of Europe's elite competition.

However, in the five previous campaigns, the north London outfit have crashed out in the round of 16.

Having qualified unseeded, Arsenal will face one of Real Madrid, VfL Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona or Zenit St. Petersburg, and will discover their fate on Monday.

Over two legs, Wenger and his men will fancy their chances against many teams, but will surely be looking for a tie with either Wolfsburg or Zenit, as two of the weaker group winners.
