NXTTakeOver: London - Which stars need to impress?

NXT TakeOver: London is only a couple of days away and the pressure is on the stars to head into the event and conclude what has been a fantastic first tour of the UK.

The demand for NXT in the UK has been high for quite some time now and they didn’t disappoint – certainly in my experience in Blackpool – and it will be much more special on Wednesday when they hit the ring for TakeOver: London.

In the main event, we have Finn Balor defending the NXT Championship against Samoa Joe in what should be a fantastic match. It’s obvious that Balor and Joe will look to steal the show and the likelihood is they won’t disappoint, which means there’s added pressure on the rest of the stars to impress.

After so much hype heading into this event, here are the stars I believe need to impress the most on Wednesday.

Emma will go up against the impressive Asuka in a singles match and this feud has been much better than we first expected. Emma and Dana Brooke have done a fantastic job in the build-up to this as there’s a language barrier for Asuka yet they still managed to tell a story.

There’s no doubt that Emma is fantastic in the ring and a solid performance is always expected from her, but she hasn’t had a lot of success on the main roster, hence her returning back to NXT and rebuilding her character – which she has succeeded in doing.

This is a huge test for her, she’s up against a brilliant opponent but if she shows that she can still mix it on the big stage then it will be a huge step for her moving back onto the main roster and making a legitimate difference.

Nia Jax has had a whirlwind year on NXT. She only made her in-ring debut in May of this year before making her official televised debut back in October and within two months she’s earned herself an NXT Women’s Championship match against Bayley.

Anyone going up against Bayley has pressure on them as she’s done it all on NXT and has been in the ring with some of the finest Divas, ranging from Charlotte to Sasha Banks. Now Jax has to live up to those expectations and put up another great match and prove to doubters that she does belong at the top on NXT.

She hasn’t had amazing matches on NXT as she’s been limited to short matches against smaller opponents, but there’s no way this match will be booked to be a shorter match.

She needs to prove she can compete for a while against top class opponents such as Bayley. Plus, with the fans so supportive for Bayley she’ll need to be able to handle the immense heat heading her way considering she’s alongside Eva Marie.

Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson will be defending their NXT Tag Team Championships against Enzo Amore and Big Cass but, despite the being the champions, I feel Dash and Dawson are the stars heading into this match with more pressure on their shoulders.

They haven’t been heavily involved in TakeOver specials and this is by far their biggest test on NXT as it’s their first TakeOver defence. This isn’t a situation they’re used to but they’re very talented and underrated so all they need to do is put on performances like they usually do and they’ll have a successful night.

It will be a tough night though considering thousands of British fans will be going crazy for Enzo and Big Cass so they need to play the roles of heels perfectly and look and compete like champions. If they are able to do that they will go down as successful champions and not bit-part champions like The Vaudevillians.

I believe the biggest name on the card that has the most pressure on his shoulders and needs to impress is Baron Corbin, who will go up against Apollo Crews.

Corbin always has his doubters and he always will because fans believe he is very one-dimensional, but he’s done well to embrace his heel role after dominating as a face for a while.

He’s going up against Crews who should be a firm fan favourite considering he’s wrestled in England and has a strong fan base in places like Preston, that already adds more pressure on Corbin to impress.

If he can put on a strong showing against Crews with close-calls and some impressive spots then I believe it will be a successful night for Corbin, win or lose.

This is a match with number one contender written all over it so we may even see Corbin taken into the NXT Championship picture with a good showing, while a main roster call-up also looms.
