WWE: Future opponents for Dean Ambrose as Intercontinental Champion

It may have come as a surprise to fans at the TLC pay-per-view when Dean Ambrose dethroned Kevin Owens to become the new Intercontinental Champion especially as booking suggested he would continue to float around from feud to feud.

Fans do have something to be excited about, at last, regarding The Lunatic Fringe as he’s enjoying some success rather than being in Roman Reigns’ shadow as he was for the past few months.

It’s important for the WWE to make sure they keep his momentum going so it’s a successful title reign. If he’s booked incorrectly then, an unsuccessful title reign will only make matters worse, and he won’t ever be the World Champion we know he can and should be.

Here are the superstars I believe should be the top contenders to Ambrose’s Intercontinental Championship which will help turn his reign into a successful one.

A feud with Kevin Owens is the obvious one because it’s taking place right now. The good thing about this feud is that it wasn’t thrown together at the last moment, but it was a gradual build, and the Ambrose win was something many fans overlooked.

We know Owens will be back, and he’s shown his intent already to get his hands on the Intercontinental Championship again so they will face off once more, or perhaps on numerous occasions if they choose to stretch the feud longer which they should.

They’re both interesting characters and solid workers which means their matches are always going to be fantastic. Their gimmicks work brilliantly for this type of feud and with the emotion fans show to both superstars we know the arenas will be rocking.

This would be the perfect time to turn Dolph Ziggler heel and have him become relevant once again. We can talk all day about what he deserves and what he’s worked hard for and the talent he possesses but as a face, he seems to be limited.

His act is now dry, and a heel turn would be a great way to spice things up, especially in a feud with Ambrose as it brings something new and exciting to the table. It means both men will be relevant, and we’ll see a lot more of them in segments and higher up the card.

Both men have been wasted for a while now, especially Ziggler in the feud with Rusev, but this would be a turning point in his career also especially if it’s a feud that lasts a couple of months.

Neville is an interesting choice, but I do feel it could help both stars in some way. The way Neville was going since he arrived it felt like despite all of his incredible matches and performances he wasn’t going to be elevated into anything serious or anything that could see him become champion.

That’s when The Miz was brought in, and that could prove to be a stroke of genius. The Miz is somebody who could help Neville move up a level because that’s where he belongs and at the same time it helps keep Miz in the limelight and we know what he’s capable of on the microphone.

It doesn’t seem likely that the WWE will turn Neville heel to do this, but it would certainly be an interesting prospect as we don’t have a high-flying heel right now. It would make it even better when we see Ambrose take on and potentially defeat superstars with different styles.

Rusev is another interesting choice and one where both characters can benefit. Rusev belongs in championship pictures because he’s simply too talented and although he hasn’t been the same since his losses to Cena earlier in the year, we know Rusev has shown he can switch things up.

The feud with Dolph was bad, but we were able to see a different side to Rusev where he was able to be dominant but funny at the same time, something we didn’t see while he was ridiculing the United States as the United States Championship. Regardless of that, it would be good to see Rusev wreaking havoc again and against a fan favourite.

I feel that both men deserve to be in the World Championship picture so perhaps they need to use each other to get to that level. The fans love Ambrose and hate Rusev, so it’s a great formula to have Ambrose play an underdog while the hate continues to grow for Rusev.

Alberto Del Rio may be the current United States Champion, but it looks likely that John Cena will return to take down Del Rio and the League of Nations and in the process, win back his United States Championship.

However, Del Rio is a great competitor and would be a perfect opponent for Ambrose. It would be a shame to bring Del Rio back into the company and have him drop the championship, and he doesn’t do anything more. His experience will be great for Ambrose as wins over a top competitor in Del Rio would be good for his development as a champion.
