Jose Mourinho has not agreed a deal to become the next manager of Manchester United, according to his agent Jorge Mendes.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Mendes, who also represents the likes of Radamel Falcao, David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo, has insisted that there hasn't been an 'official proposal' from the Red Devils for the Portuguese tactician.

Following his dismissal from Chelsea towards the end of last week, Mourinho has been heavily linked with the top job at Old Trafford.

The self-proclaimed 'Special One' endured a torrid opening half to the season with the Premier League champions, but that hasn't stopped Manchester United reportedly considering him as a successor for Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal, of course, has also had his problems in the dugout this term, with numerous reports claiming that he could be set for the sack sooner rather than later.

However, according to Mendes, the experienced Dutch coach isn't about to be replaced by Mourinho.

"There is nothing," the Portuguese told Globo Esporte when asked if Mourinho had received an offer for United.

"We don't know what will happen in the future, but now there is no agreement.

"There isn't an official proposal either, that's not true."

Risky business

But will Mourinho eventually become the United boss? As it stands, that remains uncertain, but the United hierarchy have a huge decision to make. The former Chelsea man may well be one of the most established managers in world football, but is he really the right man for United?

Mourinho is a risk for United; he doesn't bring longevity and he's not one to promote youth players, so it would prove a strange hiring for a club with such traditions.

United fans clearly aren't happy with the current football on display at Old Trafford, but is Mourinho really one to excite with his philosophy? Probably not. He has his qualities, of course, but the club shouldn't rush into anything at this stage.
