It was a bitter-sweet Boxing Day for Christian Benteke who scored the winning goal for Liverpool against Leicester City but also produced a shocking miss in the closing stages of the match.
The Belgian striker secured a precious three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side with a goal midway through the second half but somehow failed to double both his and Liverpool’s tally with Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel out of his goal.
The Foxes’ goalkeeper was up the other end of the pitch for a Leicester corner, in the hope of helping the visitors salvage something from the match, when Liverpool gained possession and launched a quick counter-attack. Benteke spurned the chance to roll the ball into the empty net from 30 yards and instead took too many touches, allowing Wes Morgan to make the block. (Scroll down this page to watch the video).

Benteke should have rolled the ball into the unguarded net, although he could also have played the ball to one of his teammates.
However, as some people have pointed out on Twitter, Benteke should have been flagged offside as soon as he received the pass. The 25-year-old was in Leicester’s half of the pitch when the ball was played, with only Morgan ahead of him.

Mixed start for Benteke
Benteke, who Liverpool signed from Aston Villa for a cool £32.5 million in July, has experienced a mixed start to his career at Anfield.
Six goals in 18 appearances is not a terrible return, although Liverpool supporters would have expected more from their number nine.
