Juan Mata's downbeat Manchester United blog is the saddest thing you'll see today

Juan Mata is usually known as a cheeky little chappy, whether it's visiting the Whitworth Gallery, or checking out local cafes and restaurants with team-mate David de Gea.

The best thing about his upbeat demeanour is that he usually blogs about his life - and not just on the football pitch either, no no no. The Spaniard lets his fans know what he's been up to and who he's been with, and is generally a ray of sunshine for everyone he encounters.

So what in the blazes happened this week? He's been Van Gaal'd, that's what's bloody happened.

The sombre 63-word entry on Mata's 'One Hour Behind' blog is a despondent ode to misery at a time when Manchester United are on the verge of equalling an unwanted 79-year-old record of losing five games in a row.

Here it is, in full. Be warned, if you're in a good mood and still full of festive cheer, you're about to be dragged right on down. Even his little 'Hugs' sign off isn't enough to lift spirits.

"This is not the time to write or to read, since so many things have been said in the last few days… It’s time to stick together and this streak will change, I’m sure of that. Both you and us want the best for the club, and the best way to achieve it is through unity. Thank you for your support. Hugs. Juan"

The usually merry Mata is of course keeping his counsel because of the Red Devils' malaise under boss Louis van Gaal, who could well be sacked if he doesn't get a result against Chelsea this evening.

The Dutchman has overseen victories in just three of his side's last 14 games which has piled on the pressure - and left them down in sixth place, three points adrift of Tottenham in the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot.

Reports this morning go as far as to suggest that Van Gaal could walk even if he does guide Manchester United to a win today. For the sake of Mata's sanity, let's hope that's the case.

What is sadder - Mata's blog or the sight of a swan crying?
