The New Year means a lot of different things for different people. For some, it's eve is an opportunity to drink themselves under the table, whilst, for others, 2016 may offer the chance for new beginnings.

For WWE fans, the first few weeks of 2016 mean just one thing - the countdown to the Royal Rumble.

The January 24th pay-per-view is dominated by the 30-man Rumble itself, but, according to reports today, the occasion is also set to see two big name Superstars go head-to-head with a title on the line.

According to The Wrestling Observer, via NoDq, the WWE have plans for a Dean Ambrose vs Kevin Owens match for the Intercontinental Championship on the same night as the new Royal Rumble champion is crowned.

Ambrose, of course, won the title from Owens back at the TLC pay-per-view on December 13 and the two are sure to put on quite a show at the first PPV of 2016. It is thought the match will be added to the official event card in the coming weeks.

The WWE Universe has high hopes for both Ambrose and Owens heading into the New Year, and the WWE appear to be giving the duo a big opportunity here.

Last year's Rumble PPV, remember, was highlighted not by Roman Reigns finding himself the last man standing, but by the epic Seth Rollins vs John Cena vs Brock Lesnar match for the WWE Heavyweight Title that proceeded it.

It remains to be seen whether this rumored match can reach those lofty standards. Still, it is a great way to start the year if, and when, it is confirmed.
