Arsenal hero Ian Wright has insisted that he's very surprised to hear that Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is set for a new deal on Merseyside.

Reports have surfaced recently that the Belgium international is set to extend his stay with the club, but Wright can't understand why the Reds are going to maintain his services for the long-term.

Since signing for Liverpool from Premier League counterparts Sunderland in 2013, Mignolet has endured a tricky time between the sticks, often coming in for criticism for his inconsistent performances.

It appears, though, that he has the backing of new manager Jurgen Klopp, who could now hand his No.1 a new deal with the club.

But Wright isn't entirely convinced and clearly believes that the club should look to replace the 'keeper sooner rather than later.

Speaking on The Sun Goals Podcast with Shaun Custis, Wright stated: "I'm very surprised to here that Mignolet is going to getting a new contract with all due respect. I think they should be looking to buy a new goalkeeper.

"Whether or not they are trying to keep him happy while they get another goalkeeper because I can't understand that one."

Klopp seems sure

Mignolet may well split opinion, but Klopp really appears to be adamant that he's going to stick with the goalkeeper.

In fact, the charismatic German coach has already played down rumours that the club are interested in Barcelona 'keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. It's now up to Mignolet to establish himself as the main man under the guidance of Klopp.
