The legend that is Francesco Totti could finally be about to hang up his boots. This is according to his wife, Ilary Blasi, who has revealed that the 'time has come' for the striker to finish his playing career.

Totti, of course, is one of the most revered names in world football, having enjoyed remarkable success at AS Roma.

While the modern day player moves from club-to-club without a second thought, Totti has remained a loyal servant at the Stadio Olimpico.

Incredibly, the 39-year-old has been plying his trade in Rome since 1992, racking up 241 goals in 591 Serie A appearances.

But it appears that the end is near. As reported by the Daily Mail, Blasi told Italian news magazine Oggi: "The time has come. Francesco is going to be 40 next year. He has enjoyed all this so much that I really think that right now he is desiring something else. But he will remain involved in football for sure."

The end

It appears, then, that injury will finally put to bed Totti's exceptional stint in the game. The forward, of course, has been out of action for the past three months with a thigh muscle injury and he was expected to return for Wednesday's Serie A match at Chievo.

However, coach Rudi Garcia has since ruled him out of the fixture and it's now uncertain as to when he will make his return to the pitch.

Let's just hope we see him star for the Serie A club again before he finally calls time on his remarkable career.

Is Totti the greatest one-club man of them all? Have your say below!
