Borrussia Dortmund have agreed to terminate Adnan Januzaj's loan with the club and allow him to return to Manchester United.
The 20-year-old has made just six Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund this season and only racked up 156 minutes of time on the pitch in the league, after agreeing to a season-long loan over the summer. He has not started a single league game, either.
Now the Times are reporting that Manchester United have asked Dortmund to cancel the deal because of his lack of playing time - and they have agreed.
The move raised more than a few eyebrows at the time because it came on the back of some sterling performances from Januzaj for Manchester United. The young winger started in both of his Premier League appearances for the Red Devils against Newcastle and Aston Villa in August and found the back of the net against the latter, only to make his Dortmund debut in September.
News of Januzaj's return has caused as much bewilderment amongst Manchester United fans as his departure did - and you can check out the best of the reaction below.
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal said at the time of Januzaj's departure: “I have said to Januzaj that I will give him opportunities in the position of nine and maybe of 10.“
"I have done that and then decided that, no, it would be better for him to go to another environment, maybe he will play more with them than me and we can see if he develops himself."
The Times add that Dortmund were considering cutting the winger's loan spell short anyway, and so decided to accommodate Manchester United's request, despite the absence of a release clause.
The writing appeared to be on the wall for the young winger when he was left out of Dortmund's party for their warm weather training to Dubai. He now faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford, with summer arrivals Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial blocking his way to the first team.
