Manchester United must sign Everton defender John Stones, according to Rio Ferdinand.

As reported by the Mirror, the former Red Devils star, who enjoyed a remarkable playing career at Old Trafford, has insisted his former club will regret it if they miss out on signing the England international.

Stones has enjoyed a fine campaign at Goodison Park, coming to prominence under Roberto Martinez.

Ferdinand certainly rates the Everton man highly, claiming that he's alongside Real Madrid ace Raphael Varane as the best young defender in world football.

The ex-United star stated: “I don’t care how much it is, you get him. You are getting a player for 10 years.

World's best

“Him and Raphael Varane are the best in the world, so I wouldn’t be looking at anyone else.

“The team starts at the back. Your platform for winning titles starts in defence.

“If he goes to another English club, they will regret it.”

United should act

Ferdinand is probably right; United would be foolish if they failed to make a move for Stones. Ultimately, at just 21-years-old, he's quickly establishing himself as one of the leading defenders in the Premier League.

He'd certainly make a fine partner for Chris Smalling, who is going from strength-to-strength in a United shirt.

The duo really could become quite the pairing for both club and country. United fans will certainly hope the club's hierarchy act sooner rather than later.

Chelsea, who attempted to sign Stones last summer, may well have different ideas, but it remains to be seen as to whether they will make their move without Jose Mourinho at the helm.

The Blues, much like Manchester United, could do with adding Stones to their ranks. It looks set to be an interesting period for the exciting youngster.
