For such a fast-paced game, it's amazing that you don't see more instances of NHL referees accidentally interfering with play.

There could well be a reason why the refs are so quick to get out of the way of any action, however, and that is the brutal physical consequences that finding themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time can deliver.

NHL referee Kelly Sutherland found that out the hard way last night during the Los Angeles Kings - Toronto Maple Leafs game.

Sutherland was nearly knocked out of his skates after finding himself on the wrong end of a huge blindside hit from Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin.

The Kings star was charging hard to provide support in along the boards when he banged into Sutherland with a nasty shoulder to the head, that sent the ref to the ice.

You can check out a video of the hit here...
