Manchester United were leading a game against a team in the relegation zone by two goals, then by one goal, and they still did not win. On paper, it was not a good evening for Louis van Gaal's men.

But the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United has got fans on both sides abuzz with excitement. For Newcastle, they bagged an unlikely point after a late goal from Paul Dummett. For Manchester United, they actually played some exciting football.

And, indeed, the reaction on social media appears to sum up that feeling. They may have dropped two points, effectively ending their slim hopes of a Premier League title challenge, but they scored. More importantly, Wayne Rooney scored and looked back to his old self.

While none of Manchester United's high-earning stars have impressed this season, it is the form of their captain that has concerned fans more than most. So, even though their usually solid defence conceded three goals, the sight of Rooney bagging a brace and an assist has put United fans on cloud nine.

Back to his best

It seems Rooney, 30, has put 2015 well and truly behind him, already scoring in all three of Manchester United's games this year. But it isn't just his goals that were impressive. His overall game against Newcastle United was superb; a true throwback to his glory days.

That is not just great news for United, but for England too. Up until now, there were serious doubts over whether Rooney would even make the starting XI. The form of Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane was putting pressure on the England skipper to find his best form. Well, it looks like he's finally found it.
