Liverpool fans react to reports Simon Mignolet has agreed new contract

To claim that Simon Mignolet has divided opinion amongst Liverpool supporters would be slightly generous on the Belgium international.

It feels like the majority of fans would like to see Jurgen Klopp splash the cash on a better goalkeeper, either this month or in the summer, following a string of blunders this season.

But, unfortunately for those Liverpool supporters who want a new number one, there’s some bad news: Mignolet is staying at Anfield until at least 2020.

This is according to the Mirror, who understand Mignolet has agreed a new long-term contract with the Reds and will earn in excess of £50,000-a-week.

Klopp has remained fiercely loyal to his first-choice keeper, despite the reaction from fans on social media, and insisted that Liverpool are not in the market for a new number one following his side’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham earlier this month.

"Our goalkeeping situation is absolutely okay,” Klopp was quoted as saying by The Times’ Merseyside football writer Tony Barrett. “Simon Mignolet is a really, really, really good keeper."

Liverpool fans react to Mignolet contract news

Here's how Liverpool fans on Twitter have reacted to the news...

Can Mignolet help Liverpool win silverware?

While Mignolet is clearly not as bad as some fans make out, there’s no doubt he is below the likes of David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois, Petr Cech, Joe Hart and Hugo Lloris in terms of ability.

If Liverpool are to seriously challenge for major honours, it could be argued that they require a better goalkeeper.

Barcelona’s unsettled keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Cologne’s Timo Horn have both been linked with the Reds in recent weeks - but while Klopp acknowledged that both are “good keepers” he issued a firm “no” when asked if he would be signing either of them at some point during 2016.
