The Royal Rumble is renowned for surprising fans with the return of some of the most popular WWE superstars.

The following is a list of 5 potential surprise entrants to the 2016 Royal Rumble match.

5. Rey Mysterio

Mysterio has been quite vocal about a potential return to the WWE. Mysterio seemed quite open to the idea of a return to the company.

Undoubtedly the crowd-favourite, high flyer would receive a hero’s ovation, if he were to return. Mysterio left a significant gap in the roster when he was released, and the idea that such a superstar would be easily replaced was an incredibly short sighted view on the WWE’s behalf, as nobody is yet to live up to Rey’s legacy. It would make sense if Rey made an appearance at the Royal Rumble, if he was serious about his potential return.

4. Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy is one of the few big names in WWE who adequately reinvented himself following his departure from the company. Matt has been involved with Ring of Honour and TNA, while helping many Indie wrestlers break onto the scene. However with the return of Matt Hardy, fans would be clambering for the return of his brother Jeff, who has been relatively anonymous by comparison.

3. Jeff Hardy

The return of Jeff Hardy to WWE has been a fantasy of many fans since he left in 2009. Rumours have been circulating around WWE that both Jeff and his brother Matt are booked to return to the company. A return at the Royal Rumble would seem to be an ideal way to reintroduce the brothers into the company.

Sadly for the WWE, it would make sense to bring both men back at the same time rather than one at a time. Analogous to this situation would be at last year’s Royal Rumble with the return of Bubba Ray Dudley, but the absence of Devon Dudley. Fans expected Devon to appear and reunite the illustrious tag team, yet they were disappointed, and the return was ultimately stale.

The return of both Hardy boys is necessary to keep fans happy.

2. Undertaker

Unlikely, but not impossible. Undertaker showed fans that he can still consistently perform at the top level, after making several appearances in 2015. If Wrestlemania 32 is to be the Deadman’s final appearance, why not make a final Royal Rumble appearance and perhaps even make an effort to seize the title and main event Wrestlemania for the last time?

Even if the Undertaker failed to win the Royal Rumble, there may be an opportunity to create an interesting feud between the Deadman and the man who potentially eliminates him. The Deadman also has a legendary history at the Royal Rumble, it would be fitting for him to conclude that chapter of his career.

1. Triple H

Considering Triple H is now semi-retired, and currently absent from live shows due to the beating he received from Roman Reigns. Triple H could make a return at the Royal Rumble and exact revenge on Reigns, which could spark a feud between both men.

A Roman Reigns vs. Triple H feud has been boiling under the pot for some time, and this would certainly be an unexpected twist for fans. The Royal Rumble in previous years has lacked spark, and has been utterly predictable. WWE have the perfect opportunity to build on a feud, and create interesting drama.

Triple H’s entry to the Royal Rumble and furthermore winning it, could be one of the greatest moments in Royal Rumble history.
