Wayne Rooney's 78th minute volley sealed a smash and grab for Manchester United as they left Anfield with a 1-0 win.

Liverpool were the 'dominant' force throughout the majority of the afternoon on Merseyside but were unable to make the most of their chances during a dull 90 minutes.

Rooney's powerful strike after Marouane Fellaini hit the crossbar left Simon Mignolet with no chance and secured a vital three points for the Red Devils in their ambition to finish in the top four.

In truth, the goal was a brief spark of excitement in an otherwise tepid affair in the northeast.

However, Liverpool will be ruing a number of missed chances and the selection of David de Gea as man of the match said a lot about Manchester United's performance.

The boring affair was highly talked about on Twitter, but not for the right reasons. Here is some of the reaction.

The victory leaves United two points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy the final Champions League position, and will provide some much-needed respite for under-pressure manager Louis van Gaal.

A win is hardly what Manchester United deserve, but that is the nature of the game and not a single supporter will be bothered by the manner of their victory.

For Liverpool, it's clear to see Jurgen Klopp has a tough task on his hands to rebuild the Reds.

The team assembled by Brendan Rodgers does not look to have the quality to qualify for the Champions League.
