Brendan Rodgers would rather have Lionel Messi over Luis Suarez

You won’t find many bigger fans of Luis Suarez than his former manager at Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irish coach, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football this week, revealed he has taken great pride in watching the world-class Uruguayan flourish at Barcelona following his three-year stint with the Reds.

Rodgers was asked by a fan how close Suarez is to becoming the world’s best player - and the ex-Liverpool boss is in no doubt that the South American is already right up there alongside the greatest.

However, there is one forward Rodgers admitted he would have over Suarez - and you can probably guess who he was referring to.

But other than five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, Rodgers says there is no other striker he would rather have in his team than the indefatigable Suarez.

“He's certainly on his way,” Rodgers replied, per the Daily Mail, when asked if Suarez was on the verge of becoming the world’s best. “For him not to be in the top three of the Ballon d'Or was incredible and it tells you that there's other politics behind him not being involved in that bracket.

“He left Liverpool as a world-class player and he's gone into a Barcelona team that was already up there and made them better. Playing with that level of players as well has obviously made him a better player. He's still young enough to win that accolade but he's certainly up there with the best.

“If I were to have a striker in my team, apart from Lionel Messi, he's certainly the one.”

Suarez has improved Barcelona

Suarez has made Barcelona a more complete team and the £75 million the Catalan giants paid Liverpool for the 28-year-old now looks a bargain.

The live-wire forward scored 25 goals in 43 appearances last term - winning all three major trophies in the process - and has a magnificent 29 goals in as many appearances this season.
