Sergio Busquets claims Atletico Madrid are more of a title threat than Real Madrid

Sergio Busquets has risked irking Real Madrid supporters after stating his belief that Atletico Madrid are more of a threat to Barcelona’s hopes of winning the Spanish league title than Los Blancos.

The world-class midfielder believes Atletico are stronger than their city rivals at this moment in time - and the league table would appear to back him up.

Atletico currently sit two points above Barcelona, who have a game in hand over Diego Simeone’s side, at the top of La Liga - and four points ahead of Zinedine Zidane’s men.

"At the moment, you can say Atletico are stronger than Real Madrid," Busquets was quoted as telling Sport by FourFourTwo. "Everyone believes they'll fight for La Liga. They're getting better all the time, they have very good players and they'll be there until the end of the season."

Atletico have been fantastic so far this season. They boast the meanest defence in La Liga - having conceding just eight goals in 20 matches - while the team spirit that won them the title in 2014 has, if anything, grown even stronger over recent months.

Atletico are potential champions

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak has emerged as a superb replacement for Thibaut Courtois, Diego Godin is arguably the world’s best centre-back while the brilliant Antoine Griezmann has taken his game up yet another level this season.

Like in 2014, the title race in La Liga could go to the wire - but Busquets may have inadvertently riled Real Madrid with his latest comments, and that could come back to haunt him and his Barcelona teammates.
