It’s fair to say that Branislav Ivanovic has had a difficult season at Chelsea.

The champions sit just four points above the relegation zone and the club’s vice-captain has been one of many players that has under-performed.

So when he was handed a one-year contract extension, Chelsea fans were not impressed.

The Serb has been at Stamford Bridge since January 2008 and had been a rock at the back and played a big part in winning multiple trophies for the club.

During his time at Chelsea, Ivanovic has won three FA Cups, two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and a League Cup. He also scored a last minute winning goal in the 2013 Europa League final against Benfica.

Last season he was voted in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, in a campaign where his side strolled to Premier League glory.

But ever since Swansea’s Jefferson Montero ran Ivanovic ragged in the opening game of the Premier League back in August, it’s all gone a bit downhill for the 31-year-old.

Despite being unable to cope with pacy wingers throughout the season, Ivanovic has kept his place as right-back making 21 appearances in all competitions.

Ivanovic’s current deal was due to expire in the summer and it’s believed that Chelsea have kept in line with their policy of only offering one-year deals to players aged 30 and over.

Are you surprised that Branislav Ivanovic has signed a new Chelsea contract?
