Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter in force, demanding the sacking of manager Louis van Gaal after the 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Having failed to score in the first-half of a home match for the 11th successive game, United were beaten by striker Charlie Austin's header, in his first game for the club since signing from QPR.

Boos subsequently rang out across Old Trafford, whilst other United fans chose to take to Twitter to voice their frustration at both the disappointing result and the complete lack of attacking intent.

Despite enjoying the majority of possession, United could only muster one shot on target with Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster entirely untested throughout.

Having suffered their sixth defeat of the season, United fans were also met with the news that Tottenham won 3-1 away at Crystal Palace to move five points above United in fourth place.

Van Gaal meanwhile will come under serious scrutiny once again for another lackluster performance. The implemented possession based style has proved increasingly stifling all season and with Jose Mourinho still available, alongside the possibility of elevating assistant manager Ryan Giggs, the Dutchman's days as manager at Old Trafford could be numbered.
