Cesc Fabregas patted Chelsea badge following abuse from Arsenal fans

Cesc Fabregas could have been forgiven if he expected a slightly friendlier welcome back to the Emirates Stadium from the Arsenal supporters after what happened last April.

Following the 0-0 draw in north London last season, a number of Gunners fans applauded their former hero as he walked off the pitch with a swapped red shirt on his back.

It was a different story this time around. Fabregas, according to the Daily Mail’s Oliver Todd, reacted to the boos of a section of Arsenal supporters by applauding them and patting the Chelsea badge on his chest.

Chelsea’s official Snapchat account later released an image of the moment Fabregas reacted after making his way towards the tunnel.

In the end, it was the Spaniard who had the last laugh. Not only did he help his side secure a precious three points but he also produced a Man of the Match performance.

The 28-year-old has flattered to deceive for the majority of this season, but he was back to his best at his former stomping ground on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal fans should cut Fabregas some slack

It seems some Arsenal fans will never be able to forgive Fabregas for his decision to leave Barcelona for Chelsea in the summer of 2014.

This is despite the fact that Fabregas almost certainly would have rejoined the Gunners had Arsene Wenger given the green light. The veteran French coach, however, felt it would have been an unnecessary signing.

Determined to return to the Premier League, despite Wenger’s surprise snub, Fabregas duly accepted Jose Mourinho’s offer and the rest is history.

For everybody concerned, it’s a shame some Arsenal fans will always feel an element of bitterness towards the World Cup winner.
