Angel di Maria could have - and perhaps should have - been a superstar for Manchester United.

It all began so well for the Argentine at Old Trafford, but it didn’t take long for things to start going horribly wrong and less than 12 months after his record-breaking £59.7 million move from Real Madrid he was offloaded to Paris Saint-Germain.

United’s loss has, however, undoubtedly been PSG’s gain. Di Maria has been superb for the Parisians and scored two sensational goals - including a real contender for Goal of the Season - in a 5-1 win over Angers at the weekend. (Scroll down this page to see Di Maria’s goal).

While Manchester United were losing to Southampton, Di Maria was busy scoring two world-class goals for his current employers. How did Van Gaal not manage to get the best out of the 27-year-old?

The attempted burglary at his Prestbury mansion towards the start of last year obviously didn’t help matters, but Di Maria was struggling to produce his best form under Van Gaal long before then. That particular incident may simply have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Di Maria has rediscovered his form and confidence since joining the Ligue 1 champions and was in majestic form at the weekend.

His first goal was a magnificent 25-yard volley, while his second was reminiscent of the excellent chip he scored for United against Leicester City last season.

Manchester United fans have every reason to ask why Van Gaal failed to get the best out of such a brilliant footballer because it’s arguably been his biggest failure since joining the club.
