Football News

Lionel Messi doesn’t come across as a big prankster, but the world’s best player couldn’t resist taking the mick out of his Barcelona teammate Gerard Pique on Instagram today.

Messi uploaded a video of Pique on stage after being named as the best Catalan sportsman of 2015 and noticed how the centre-back kept touching his left leg during the interview with the award’s host.

Messi and Pique have known each other for years - they grew up together at La Masia - so the former felt this was the perfect opportunity, before congratulating him on the award, to make a cheeky joke. (Scroll down to see Messi’s comment).

"How's the quadricep Geri? I hope it's ok! 😂😂😂" Messi wrote, according to Sport, before adding: "I congratulate you for the prize! 👍👍👍👍"

Pique can be seen in the clip dedicating the award to his parents, and getting a little emotional while doing so, but we’re certain the defender will appreciate Messi’s congratulatory Instagram post - despite the cheeky comment.

It makes a refreshing change to see Messi congratulating his teammates, rather than being the one receiving yet more adulation.

Pique has regained his focus since Enrique arrived

Pique’s form dipped after Pep Guardiola left the Camp Nou in 2012, but he seems to have regained his focus since Luis Enrique arrived in the summer of 2014.

The proud Catalan has re-established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Europe over the past season-and-a-half and will be hoping to help his beloved Barcelona win more silverware at the end of this season.
