Many fans took the opportunity to praise Vidic's former partnership with Rio Ferdinand - in unison they formed the cornerstone of much of United's later success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Unable to completely put their allegiance aside, certain Liverpool fans tweeted about Fernando Torres' former hold over the Serbian, whilst still showing their respect for Vidic's fantastic career.

At 34, Vidic had been linked with a return to the Premier League; however, the former United captain has instead chosen to bow out with his legendary reputation still very much intact as a winner of five league titles and the 2008 Champions League.
