Anthony Martial produced a Man of the Match display against Derby County in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night and the talented Frenchman continues to enhance his burgeoning reputation.

The 20-year-old didn’t get himself on the scoresheet but provided two assists - for Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata - as Manchester United secured an important 3-1 win at the iPro Stadium.

After the match, Louis van Gaal admitted he felt Martial started the match “not so good” - but, after the opening 20 minutes, went on to produce a “fabulous” performance. The under-fire Dutch coach also predicted that the young striker will be a “great player” for the Red Devils in the years to come.

“He started not so good, I think, but I said that to him and after the first 20 minutes he came into the match and he was fabulous," Van Gaal was quoted as saying in his post-match press conference by Goal.

"I am very happy that he is a Manchester United player because I think he shall be a great player for Manchester United for a long time.”

Anthony Martial on course to superstardom

Much was made of the extraordinary fee United paid AS Monaco for Martial at the end of the summer transfer window - the official figure was an initial £36 million, although leaked documents have revealed that fee may have been higher - but Martial has proved that he was worth the money.

Although still learning his trade, the France international possesses immense potential and could, if he fulfils it, become one of the world’s best forwards.

The comparisons with Thierry Henry refuse to go away and you can understand why.
