Liverpool are unlikely to sign Alex Teixeira from Shakhtar Donetsk before the transfer window closes this evening, but there’s a chance they could secure a loan deal for Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev.

This is according to The Sun, who understand the 25-year-old is keen to leave the Bernabeu in order to boost his chances of making the Russia squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has also confirmed that Cheryshev is likely to leave the Bernabeu, informing reporters: “Cheryshev could leave. He’s a great player but he needs to play.”

Cheryshev has only made two league appearances for Los Blancos this season and has not made any of Zidane’s match-day squads since the French coach replaced Rafael Benitez last month.

Liverpool have previously been linked to the Russian and The Sun claim that Jurgen Klopp remains keen to do a deal.

Sevilla also want Cheryshev today

However, it’s understood that Sevilla are also in the race for Cheryshev and, according to Spanish football writer Andy West, are likely to beat the Reds to his signature.

Copa del Rey embarrassment

Cheryshev impressed on loan at Villarreal last season but hit the headlines for the wrong reasons back in December.

Benitez, unaware that Cheryshev was ineligible to play, deployed the Russia international in a Copa del Rey match against Cadiz.

Los Blancos were subsequently thrown out of the competition, much to the embarrassment of everyone associated with the Spanish giants.

Decent signing for Liverpool - if they get him

A player of great quality - but perhaps not quite good enough for the Spanish giants - Cheryshev would be an interesting acquisition for Liverpool if Klopp can lure him to Anfield.
