Jesse Lingard mistakenly awarded the Man of the Match trophy

Geoff Shreeves usually carries out his role as a Sky Sports pundit with complete professionalism.

After Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Stamford Bridge on Sunday, however, he made quite the embarrassing gaffe.

Shreeves asked Juan Mata to hand Jesse Lingard the Man of the Match award, not realising that it was in fact Mata who had received the honour.

The pundit quickly realised his error and instead handed the trophy to Lingard to pass to his Spanish team-mate.

To his credit, Shreeves handled the incident with great competence.

It was reminiscent of the error made by American comedian Steve Harvey when he gave the Miss Universe award to the runner-up two months ago.

Watch the funny incident:

Glorious goal

Perhaps Shreeves was simply recalling Lingard’s wonder goal at the time of the interview. The 23-year-old gave United the lead with a glorious turn and strike that looked as if it would be the winner.

That was until Diego Costa spoiled the party by scoring a 91st minute equaliser.

Top four battle

The draw leaves United 12 points adrift of first-placed Leicester City and six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City in the race for a top four spot.

Despite Chelsea’s sustained dominance in the second half, Louis van Gaal will probably see the result as two points dropped after United came so close to recording their first win against Chelsea in four years.

The Dutchman has reason to be happy with the efforts of Lingard, however. The England forward has now scored three goals in his last six appearances and continues to keep summer signing Memphis Depay out of the team.
