Robbie Savage has been left shocked by Louis van Gaal's recent statement about Manchester United.

According to the experienced Dutch manager, United have been playing like champions since the start of 2016.

The Red Devils, who currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League table, have only won three of their six matches since New Year's Day, but the Old Trafford boss is of the opinion that his side are showing the form of champions.

“When you see our results in 2016, when we have that for a whole season we are the champions," Van Gaal said, as

“We have to show it every week now because the gap is so big.”

Savage response

Unsurprisingly, then, pundit Savage has hit out at Van Gaal, appearing to be shocked by the statement.

Speaking on BT Sport's Fletch and Sav this morning, the former Wales international just couldn't contain his surprise at Van Gaal's comments about United.

Here's how Savage reacted to the statement:

United have it all to do

Forget about the title, it's going to be hard enough for the Red Devils to secure a place in next season's Champions League competition.

As it stands, Van Gaal's side sit six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, so they have it all to do to claim a place in the top four. United certainly have to secure all three points against Premier League strugglers Sunderland this afternoon.
