Manchester United fans on Twitter are demanding Ed Woodward and the Glazer family sack Louis van Gaal and replace the beleaguered Dutch coach with Jose Mourinho following today’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

United slumped to their seventh defeat of the season against the relegation-threatened Black Cats, who began the afternoon in 19th position, and supporters turned to social media to voice their frustrations.

Van Gaal’s side went behind in the third minute of the match through Wahbi Khazri, but equalised just before half time thanks to a clever finish by Anthony Martial. However, United left the north-east with nothing to show for their efforts after David de Gea inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

By losing the match, United look set to lose more ground on their top-four rivals.

They were already six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City before a ball was kicked today and their hopes of securing Champions League football for next season have now taken another hefty blow.

Speculation linking Mourinho with the United job is certain to intensify over the next few days - and supporters are hoping the former Chelsea boss replaces Van Gaal sooner rather than later.
