Raheem Sterling left Liverpool for Manchester City last summer in order to boost his chances of winning silverware - and today, against his former employers at Wembley Stadium, he landed his first trophy: the Capital One Cup.

But despite securing a winners’ medal, the England international might struggle to get to sleep tonight when he thinks about that golden chance he missed in the second half.

Sterling had an excellent opportunity to kill the game off when David Silva put the ball on a plate for him but somehow put his shot wide. (Scroll down this page for the video and Twitter reaction).

The 21-year-old became public enemy number one at Anfield last summer after he refused to put pen-to-paper on a new contract at Liverpool, expressed his desire to leave the club and then signed for Manchester City.

However, £49 million was a decent return for Liverpool, who signed Sterling in 2010 when he was making waves as a teenager in QPR’s youth ranks.

Liverpool fans react

Sterling should improve under Pep Guardiola

Sterling has shown glimpses of his best form at the Etihad Stadium - 10 goals in 33 appearances prior to this afternoon’s cup final is hardly a terrible return - but it could be argued that he has failed to move up game on another level, as was expected, since joining Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

However, with Pep Guardiola arriving at Manchester City this summer, don’t rule out Sterling from fulfilling his immense potential with the Citizens just yet.
