Manchester United’s Anthony Martial has set his sights on becoming a prolific goalscorer like Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman has found the net 12 times this season - a decent return in his first season in England - and has admitted his main aim is to get on the scoresheet more often.

Ronaldo, who played six seasons at Old Trafford before signing for Real Madrid, is the ultimate sharp-shooter and it’s no surprise Martial has identified him as the man to follow.

“I must continue to work hard in training,” the 20-year-old told Sky Sports, per Goal.

“I need to think more like a goal scorer. Sometimes I get so immersed in the game because I love general play so much.

“Someone like [Cristiano] Ronaldo focuses on scoring. To progress, perhaps I also need to think more about scoring.”

Only Wayne Rooney (14) has scored more goals than Martial this season, who has impressed since signing for £36 million from Monaco in the summer.

And his attitude is another factor that United’s chiefs are bound to admire.

Can Martial inspire victory against City?

In a season that has provided many low moments, Martial’s emergence has been a positive and Louis van Gaal will hope the winger can inspire his team to victory in this afternoon’s Manchester derby.

Manchester City host the Red Devils in a highly-anticipated Premier League clash that could go a long way to determining the top four.

United are currently sixth in the table, four points behind their rivals.

Van Gaal has come under heavy criticism this season, and a report in Spanish newspaper El Pais claims Jose Mourinho has signed a pre-contract agreement to replace the Dutchman, but victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s team will keep alive their hopes of securing Champions League football.
