Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has insisted that his former manager Jose Mourinho has the attributes to become the next manager of Manchester United.

Following his dismissal at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, the Portuguese tactician has been heavily linked with the top job at Old Trafford.

United, of course, have endured a tricky spell under Louis van Gaal's regime - the club currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League table - and it's far from certain as to whether he will stay in charge ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

That could lead United to Mourinho, who, despite his troubles in west London, is still recognised as one of the leading managers in world football.

Lampard most definitely believes that Mourinho has the credentials to take over at Old Trafford. Speaking to, when asked whether Mourinho could get the Red Devils back on track, he stated: “I think Mourinho can manage anywhere in the world.

Mourinho record

“I think he’s shown it with his record and whether it’s with Porto, a so-called smaller team in Europe; Chelsea, the success he had there; Inter, again taking a team that’s hardly won the Champions League to go and win it; Real Madrid.

“No job will be too much for him. [Manchester United is] not an easy job, similar with Antonio Conte with Chelsea [the Italian is expected to take over in the summer], but he certainly has the attributes to do it.”

But there appears to be a long way to go in this saga. For one reason or another, it appears that the club's regime don't appear to be entirely convinced over Mourinho.

You can hardly blame them, of course; the self-proclaimed 'Special One' has achieved a great deal of success throughout his career, but he just hasn't been able to produce the goods over a consistent period.

Change required

But the dynamic at the Theatre of Dreams has to change sooner rather than later. After a crucial 1-0 victory in the derby against Manchester City on Sunday, Van Gaal may well have silenced his critics for now, but it's surely unlikely that he has a long-term future at the club.

Ultimately, the football on show and results have just not been good enough. Even if the Dutchman managed to achieve a top four finish this season, it's probably time for him to move on.

United need to head in a new direction, but it remains to be seen as to whether that direction involves Mourinho. It's one that will continue to split opinion.
