Piers Morgan has just made an astonishing claim on Twitter that is likely to anger plenty of Arsenal fans.

The television presenter is a massive Gooner and has been a member of the ‘Wenger Out’ campaign for many years.

With the Emirates club out of both the Champions League and the FA Cup - as well as being 11 points adrift of league leaders Leicester - the pressure has been heaped on manager Arsene Wenger.

The French boss has been at the club for 20 years but has failed to win the league title since 2004.

This has prompted many of the Arsenal faithful calling for his resignation while a banner was unveiled earlier this month reading: “Arsene, thanks for the memories but it’s time to say goodbye.”

However, Morgan has just tweeted to his 4.9 million followers: “I’ve been told on very good authority that Wenger’s been offered a new 3-yr contract by Arsenal. If true, utterly outrageous.”

While this news is yet to be confirmed, it’s an incredibly surprising claim from Morgan.

Earlier this week the club’s second largest shareholder, Alister Usmanov, insisted that Arsenal must keep hold of their manager even if they finish the season trophyless.

“Like in any sport, there are ups and downs. The club must retain its major symbol and main asset: Arsene Wenger,” he told Rossiya24, per Sky Sports.

“I believe Arsene Wenger is a great coach, and Arsenal has to give him the opportunity to plan the succession process and leave his legacy when he deems it necessary. It is very important for the club to maintain the principles established by those people who created its victories. Arsenal needs Arsene Wenger.”

The meltdown on Twitter will certainly be something to look forward to if this news if officially confirmed, with a section of the Arsenal faithful set to be fuming if Wenger is given a new deal.
