When you see John Obi Mikel trending during a Chelsea match, you fear the worst.

The Nigerian midfielder is something of a scapegoat at Stamford Bridge, with some fans not always appreciating his footballing talent.

But his performance in the opening 45 minutes against Aston Villa this afternoon has been sublime.

Even Chelsea fans have recognised that.

Mikel played a major part in the Blues’ opening goal with an incredible piece of skill to breeze past two players.

And Twitter exploded after this rare piece of silkiness from their midfielder. Here are some of the best tweets:

Mikel’s skills led to Ruben Loftus-Cheek scoring his first Premier League goal to put the away side 1-0 up at Aston Villa.

Alexandre Pato, who had earlier come off the bench to make his debut, then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after he was brought down.

It’s a first half that Chelsea have dominated, with Aston Villa looking like a team that is arguably the worst in Premier League history. Just three wins in 31 matches in the league makes for grim reading and the Villains are already preparing for life in the Championship next season.

Mikel could be playing his final few Premier League matches for Chelsea with the 28-year-old being linked with a move away from west London in the summer.

He has been a fantastic servant for the club, having signed back in 2006, making over 350 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions.

If he continues to play like he has in the first 45 minutes against Villa, Chelsea fans will be praying he stays at the end of the season.
