What next for NXT following the main roster call-ups?

The whirlwind WrestleMania weekend has now come to an end and the stars of NXT were heavily featured.

Many fans consider TakeOver: Dallas as the best wrestling show to take place this past weekend. It saw Finn Balor successfully defend his NXT Championship against Samoa Joe, but The Revival and Bayley were unable to keep hold of their championships.

Jason Jordan, Chad Gable and Asuka also had a great weekend but the success for NXT didn’t stop there.

At WrestleMania, we saw a surprising winner of the Andre the Giant memorial battle royal with The Lone Wolf, Baron Corbin, throwing Kane over the top rope, less than 48 hours after putting on an impressive performance against Austin Aries at TakeOver.

Not only that, Apollo Crews was the lucky individual making his main roster debut on the post-WrestleMania edition of Monday Night Raw, looking good against former NXT star, Tyler Breeze.

With so many things happening so quickly regarding NXT, what’s next for the so-called ‘developmental’ brand?

It’s bittersweet as an NXT fan because we grow to love seeing our favourite superstars on a weekly basis We grow fond of them and see them develop into main event talent, but we’re happy that they have a bright future ahead of them.

When they make the jump, there’s a big gap to fill on the roster but, usually, we see one or two talents move up every so often.

However, this isn’t the case right now as quite a few of them have left NXT in quick succession and we’re left wondering just who will be able to fill that void.

On one hand, it’s a glorious opportunity for some unknown stars to make their mark on NXT and carve out a great future for themselves, but how many of them will actually be able to make us forget that the likes of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were helping carry the brand forward?

Granted, Balor, Joe and Bayley are still there and they’re arguably the top stars on NXT right now. Now with Breeze, Crews, Corbin, Enzo Amore, Big Cass and The Vaudevillians part of the main roster, it’s up to the writers to come up with a plan to bring in new talent or elevate some of the talents they already have, into a more prominent role.

They did a good job when Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch moved up; it’s time to do it again on a larger scale.

With new stars come new feuds, although there are some obvious choices that will take place before brand new contenders can emerge.

For example, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder will obviously be looking to win back their NXT Tag Team Championship which was won by American Alpha, while the same applies to Bayley, who was defeated by Asuka.

This is probably why Bayley hasn’t moved up to the main roster just yet, with a rematch in their contracts we should expect to see them compete for the titles once more before their NXT careers are clearer.

It’s doubtful that Joe will battle Balor for the third time, so the big names we could see mix it up in or around the championship pictures are the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura and Aries. However, all eyes will be on Bobby Roode also if he’s to sign a deal to compete on NXT, any three of those could do well in a feud with Balor or a feud with Joe.

As mentioned above, this is the chance for current NXT stars to impress, guys like Elias Samson and Tye Dillinger will be looking to take advantage of the current situation but we should also expect to see some new additions making an impact.

We’ve already seen what Rich Swann can do, so we should expect him and other similar NXT competitors step up as the Global Cruiserweight Series draws near.

It’s unclear what the contractual agreement is with Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, but the two of them have impressed every time they’ve appeared on NXT so I feel they could make an impact too.

If we’re looking at call-ups from the guys and girls who are currently only appearing on house shows, then No Way Jose is somebody who could be making the jump relatively quickly. Hugo Knox could also be ready along with Mandy Rose – who features heavily on Total Diva’s – as well as Daria.

However, more of the focus will be on Patrick Clark and Bronson Mathews – who we know as Josh Bredl, winner of the recent Tough Enough series – who looked impressive on the show and are competing on house shows.

It’s a big task to accomplish, but the writer’s and Triple H haven’t let us down just yet, so we have to wait and see what they have up their sleeve to continue the fantastic year.
