Liverpool fans left amazed by Mamadou Sakho's Borussia Dortmund performance

Liverpool fans left Borussia Dortmund's incredible Westfalenstadion feeling like they had won and, in a way, they did. A 1-1 draw away to the Bundesliga side in their Europa League quarter-final first leg certainly puts them as favourites to qualify.

It was a resolute performance and Divock Origi, who was a surprise starter ahead of Daniel Sturridge, rightly took most of the plaudits after his first-half goal put Liverpool ahead.

However, Liverpool fans have rightly been dishing out some well-earned praise to another top performer in Thursday's match. Well, it is not exactly praise insomuch as complete amazement as to how he managed to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang quiet for 90 minutes.

Yes, Mamadou Sakho once again defied his critics – and logic – to keep one of Europe's deadliest strikers in his back pocket. Looking at the tweets from some fans though, you would think he defied the laws of physics.

With his spindly legs and awkward style, Sakho has certainly had to come up with a unique style to flourish and he will be the first to admit that it sometimes does not work. However, it was working up a treat last night as the Frenchman made three blocks, two clearances, one interception and won 100% of his ariel duels.

The reaction

Needless to say, Sakho has been trending on Twitter throughout the night as delirious Liverpool fans come to terms with the fact that they might actually win Europe's booby prize this season and with it qualification to the Champions League. Sako, it appears, is the man to take them all the way.

There was even praise for the much-maligned duo of Dejan Lovren and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who themselves made vital contributions to the result. Take a look at the best reaction on Twitter below:

Liverpool fans will be hoping Sakho can repeat his heroics in front of the Kop at Anfield next Thursday.
