Graeme Souness snubs Riyad Mahrez from Premier League team of the year

Graeme Souness is paid to watch football games but one has to wonder if he’s watched any this season after the former Liverpool man unveiled his Premier League team of the season.

Leicester star Riyad Mahrez is in the running to be crowned best player of 2015-16 - he’s got John Terry’s vote - so it’s almost a given that he belongs in the team of the year.

Not so according to Souness. A player who has lit up the Premier League with 16 goals and 11 assists is remarkably omitted.

“Riyad Mahrez may be favourite for player of the year,” explained the Scot, “but who do you pick him instead of? [Dimitri] Payet? [Dele] Alli? Not for me.”

Well, at least N’Golo Kante, Leicester’s road-running midfielder, would be included, right?

In fact, only one Leicester player made Souness’ team, striker Jamie Vardy.

Ranieri's XI

Claudio Ranieri better not see Souness’s selections or the Italian might just collapse from shock.

The Leicester boss recently admitted he expects to see 11 players in the PFA Team of the Year after the Foxes’ brilliant climb to the top of the table.

“I’d put all of my 11 players [in the PFA team],” Ranieri told reporters, per Goal. “They have allowed the fans to dream.

A win at Sunderland this afternoon will see Leicester extend their lead over Tottenham to 10 points - at least for a few hours - with five games remaining.

It’s a pity Souness hasn’t been watching.
