Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has insisted that Fernando Torres still has time to earn a recall to the Spain squad for Euro 2016 – as long as he keeps up his excellent form until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old former Chelsea striker has been instrumental in Atletico Madrid’s surge towards the summit of La Liga, and having bagged five goals and two assists in his last six games there is growing support in the Spanish media for Torres to be included in the 23-man squad that travels to France.

Ahead of Bayern Munich’s clash with Atletico on Wednesday night, his former Liverpool teammate Alonso has weighed into the argument.

“If he continues at this level, he will surely have the chance to play at the Euros, although Vicente [Del Bosque] has the last word," Alonso told AS. “I am happy to see him back to his best form and he looks very happy at Atletico.”

Torres has not played for Spain since the 3-0 win over Australia in Spain’s final group game of the 2014 World Cup, but with few alternative options up front, many are predicting that Del Bosque will give Torres the chance to add to his 38 international goals.

In a glittering career that looked to be waning before his recent triumphs at home-town club Atletico, Torres won the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2012 European Championships with Spain.

Alonso also spoke to AS of their close friendship. “The fans love him and he is an idol there. He is also a great friend because of all the experiences we have lived together. But on the field we are not friends. He seems happy and well-loved, and I am glad for him. I hope he continues that way after this tie”.

Bayern are slight favourites to progress to the Champions League final, but with Torres back from suspension Alonso will need to be at his best to prevent another disappointing semi-final defeat for Pep Guardiola.
