Ahead of their match at Payback, both Charlotte and Natalya had promoted the importance of the bout well.
WWE chose to favour their tradition of relying on legends of the industry in order to increase interest for the match, with Charlotte being accompanied by her father, Ric Flair, and Natalya having her uncle, Bret Hart, in her corner.
The company did well by making this match a family affair, as it increased the popularity of both wrestlers whilst remaining important as a Women's Championship Title contest.

As with much of the talent which makes up WWE's Women's Division, Natalya does not receive the amount of focus she deserves in relation to her popularity amongst the WWE Universe.
One of the most experienced female wrestlers on WWE's current roster, the 33-year-old has taught the young, fresh NXT talent a lot about what it means to be a female wrestler on a male-dominated roster.
With this in mind, placing her in a match against the current WWE Women's Champion meant members of the WWE Universe were in for a hugely exciting match-up, and they were not disappointed.
Whilst the finish to this bout was heavily criticised by some followers of professional wrestling, a win over someone as huge as Natalya, only adds to the fall which Charlotte will receive when she eventually loses her belt.
Following a well-balanced match, WWE produced yet another questionable finish as the current Champion locked in a sharp shooter, only for referee Charles Robinson to call for the bell as he deemed Natalya to have tapped out to the hold.
This ending was frustrating for every fan watching the event, as Natalya proved herself as a genuine contender for the Title, only to fall victim to what seemed yet another botched finish.
What such a questionable ending does prove, however, is that Charlotte and Natalya are due a rematch, with the company surely set to put on another impressive display but with a more plausible ending.
Whatever the outcome, it is clear that the company is intent on keeping Charlotte as the face of the Women's Division and therefore Women's Champion, despite the strong competition from wrestlers such as Natalya.
In addition, although it is not yet clear when their time will come it is obvious that WWE are determined to hold off the likes of Becky Lynch or Sasha Banks having a genuine chance at becoming Women's Champion for as long as possible, as well.
Ultimately, whilst Charlotte has proven herself to be a worthy WWE Women's Champion, wins such as the questionable one she secured at Payback on Sunday night add to the fact that when her reign does come to an end, it will be a memorable occasion.
