The incident capped a miserable night for the former Tottenham striker. His team missed out on the chance to reach the Europa League final as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners (3-1 on aggregate).

Bruno’s own goal in the seventh minute opened the scoring but Liverpool had to wait until the second half to extend their lead.

Firmino's skill

Daniel Sturridge sent out a clear message to Jurgen Klopp when he tucked the ball home in the 63rd minute.

And Villarreal’s hopes were dashed when Victor Luiz received a second yellow card moments later.

Adam Lallana got on the scoresheet when he turned in a loose ball after Firmino’s excellent run.

The win means Klopp has guided his team to two finals in his first season in charge at Anfield.

He’ll be hoping the Europa League final doesn’t end in the same fate as the Capital One Cup final, though.

The Reds will take on Sevilla in the final in Basel after they overcame Shakhtar Dontesk.

The La Liga outfit, who are looking to make it a hat-trick of Europa League victories, beat Shakhtar 5-3 on aggregate.
